WEST LIBERTY, IA – West Liberty High School is proud to announce the 2026 class of the West Liberty High School Comet Athletic Hall of Fame. This distinguished group includes individuals and a team whose accomplishments, service, leadership, and dedication have made exceptional contributions to West Liberty athletics.
The Hall of Fame was established to honor and celebrate the rich history and tradition of West Liberty’s athletic programs. Its purpose is to maintain the history and tradition of the successful athletic programs at West Liberty High School. The Hall of Fame will serve as a means of recognizing, preserving, and honoring the athletes, teams, coaches, and other individuals who made significant contributions to these athletic programs.
The 2026 Hall of Fame class includes two athletes, one coach, one distinguished contributor, and one team representing decades of athletic excellence and dedication.
Avery Meyers - Athlete
Avery Meyers is being honored for outstanding accomplishments in track and field, football, basketball, and baseball.
Meyers was a two-time state champion in track and field, winning the discus title in 2011 and the shot put title in 2012. He earned three top-five state finishes in discus, placing third in 2010, first in 2011, and fifth in 2012. He was also a two-time state qualifier in shot put, finishing 11th in 2011 and first in 2012.
Meyers holds current West Liberty High School records in both discus with a throw of 178 feet, 5 inches, and shot put with a mark of 58 feet, 2.25 inches. He was a conference champion in discus in 2010 and a conference runner-up in both shot put and discus in 2011. He also placed fourth in shot put and 10th in discus at the Drake Relays in 2012.
A three-sport varsity athlete, Meyers earned first-team all-state honors in football as a defensive lineman in 2011, first-team all-conference honors in basketball in 2012, and second-team all-conference honors in basketball in 2011. He was a four-year varsity participant in football, basketball, baseball, and track and field while maintaining a 4.0 grade-point average.
Meyers continued his athletic career at the University of Iowa, where he was a four-year letter winner in track and field from 2014 through 2017. He placed eighth in shot put and discus at the 2017 Big Ten Championships, earned Dean’s List recognition in 2016, and received the John Raffensperger Dedication Award in 2016.
Nick Marin - Athlete
Nick Marin is being inducted in recognition of an exceptional wrestling career and longtime service to West Liberty wrestling.
Marin was a two-time state wrestling champion at 112 pounds, winning titles in 1994 and 1996. He was also a state runner-up at 103 pounds in 1995. He finished his high school career with a 115-15 record, including 60 pins, and posted a 37-1 record in 1996.
A two-time conference champion, Marin earned second-team Academic All-State honors from the Iowa Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association in 1995 and 1996. He was also an AAU National Folkstyle Champion in the cadet 103-pound division in 1994.
In addition to wrestling, Marin participated in football for four years and cross country for two years. He has continued to support the sport as a volunteer wrestling coach at West Liberty High School for five seasons and at the West Liberty Wrestling Club for 10 seasons. He was also part of the AAU Folkstyle Small School State Championship team in 2002.
Norm Mitts - Coach
Norm Mitts is being honored for a legendary coaching career spanning more than three decades.
Mitts served as head softball coach at West Liberty from 1973 through 1995 and again from 2004 through 2009. During his tenure, he won more than 600 career softball games and guided the program to three regional finals, five sectional championships, two conference championships, and three conference tournament championships.
His softball teams reached the regional finals in 1973, 1984, and 1993. They won sectional championships in 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, and 1981; conference championships in 1981 and 1986; and conference tournament championships in 1974, 1975, and 1976.
Mitts also served as head girls basketball coach from 1973 through 1992 and guided the program to a regional final in 1985. Beyond his coaching accomplishments, he was part of the group that helped move the softball field to its current location at the Elementary School.
Don Feldman - Distinguished Contributor
Don Feldman is being inducted for more than four decades of devoted service and support of West Liberty athletics.
Feldman volunteered as a member of the football chain gang for 45 years, from 1974 through 2018. He provided equipment that helped establish the softball field at the Elementary School in 1979 and provided and installed tiling around Memorial Field in the 1980s. He also provided a video camera for basketball games during that decade.
In recognition of his service, Feldman received the Distinguished Service Award from the Iowa Football Coaches Association in 2002. He has also been a longtime active member of the West Liberty Athletic Booster Club.
A 1958 graduate of West Liberty High School, Feldman has maintained a strong family connection to the district. Six of his children and 18 of his 22 grandchildren are West Liberty High School graduates. He has also been a member of the Lions Club for more than 40 years and has been an active member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, serving on the parish council, assisting with Parish Life Center construction, and serving as an usher.
2015 Volleyball Team - Team
The 2015 West Liberty volleyball team is being inducted after making school history as the first Comet team to play for a state championship.
The team finished the season with a 37-5 overall record, was the River Valley Conference South regular-season runner-up, and won the River Valley Conference Tournament championship. The Comets advanced through the postseason with victories over Solon, Mediapolis, and Centerville before defeating Forest City and Mt. Vernon in the state tournament. West Liberty finished as the state runner-up after competing in the state championship match against Nevada.
The team was led by head coach Ruben Galvan and assistant coaches Brittney Boffeli, Veronica Rivera, and Susan Buckley.
Team members were Lauren Aird, Macy Akers, Haddie Anderson, Elizabeth Baca, Kyleigh Becker, Audra Bridenstine, Hailey Daufeldt, Mariela Filerio, Emma Martin, Brianna Morales, Hallie Mueller, Cassedi Simon, Maddie Simon, Breana Thurness, and Tamra Wiseman.
The 2026 Comet Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place on September 25, 2026. This class reflects the enduring excellence, commitment, and community spirit that continue to define West Liberty athletics.
