As part of the National School Lunch Program, children can qualify for free or reduced-price school meals based on household income and family size.  Applications for free or reduced-priced meals should be submitted at the beginning of each school year because the previous year's benefits only carry over for 30 days into the new school year. The application opens in mid-July each year and remains open throughout the year.  We all know that things can  happen at any time causing household income to drop (layoffs, injuries, change in wages, etc.) Please know that whenever a change like this occurs you can apply to see if your children qualify for free or reduced meals at that time.  Families may submit more than one application during the school year if something happens that changes the household income and they think that they may qualify for additional benefits.

If your children qualify for free or reduced meals the benefit may also extend to fees for school registration,  band instrument fees, and driver's education. Just be sure to select the appropriate boxes when you fill out your free and reduced application!
