There is a new item in the hallway of West Liberty Elementary School! When you're approaching it may look like a place to purchase snacks or beverages, but it's not, it's a book vending machine!
This machine brings together several building goals. The first is pretty obvious, boosting our Comet's literacy and reading scores. Providing students with the opportunity to receive a book that they can take home and keep will help to encourage reading outside of school. The more that students practice reading both in school and at home, the better our literacy scores will be! The other goals that this machine promotes is our Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) goal, and attendance goal which we will explain next.
How do students receive a book from the vending machine?
This vending machine takes special tokens that are made available to students who have met their PBIS goals and who have good attendance! Students are recommended by their teacher to receive a token from Elementary Librarian, Ms. Bugenhagen, they also receive a certificate for their accomplishments. Students are announced during lunch and meet Ms. Bugenhagen by the machine to pick out their book to take home and keep. Here are some pictures of students receiving their books!
Books will also be provided to Preschool and Kindergarten students to take home this year as well. They won't be able to get them from the vending machine this year, but we're looking forward to next year when they will! We had the funds to start this program it this year, but we could use some help to continue providing books to students in years to come. We would welcome donations to keep this program moving forward, letters will be sent out to the community soon. If you are interested in donating funds towards the book machine please send your donations to:
