Thank you to The University of Iowa (U of I) Stead Family Children's Hospital Injury Prevention Program, Harper's Cycling and Fitness, and the West Liberty Police Department for bringing the Bike Rodeo to the Elementary!
The rodeo started with a presentation in the gym. Representatives from the U of I Stead Family Children's Hospital Injury Prevention Program along with Chief Werling and Officer Holmes from the West Liberty Police Department spoke with students about the importance of bike safety. Wearing your helmet, wearing bright clothes, riding on the sidewalk, stoping at crosswalks and stop signs, watching out for vehicles, and making sure that parents/adults in charge know that you're leaving and where you're going. In the pictures below they demonstrate how important it is to wear a helmet: (the egg represents the human head)

Officer Holmes spoke about safety issues that WLPD sees most often around town and provided pointers and safety tips to students. The Injury Prevention Program will be providing items to WLPD for officers to hand out when they see children following bike safety rules!
While students were listening to the presentation representatives from Harper’s Cycling and Fitness were performing maintenance on the bikes that students brought to school today.
Throughout this afternoon each class will get to go out to the playground to be fitted for their bike helmet and ride their bike through an obstacle course! One first grader and one second grader who completes the course will be chosen to receive a new bike!
Thank you to everyone who made this day possible! We hope that this will help our Comets to have a safe and fun summer! To learn more about bike safety please visit this page: https://uihc.org/childrens/hea...
